Education

Degree at DigiPen

Swift is a 2005 graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation program at the DigiPen Insititute of Technology in Washington, USA. She told Eurogamer: "I was in my Junior year of high school and I knew that I really wanted to make videogames... I was talking to my Dad about possibly going into a Computer Science programme somewhere so I could maybe break into the games industry one day. He had heard about DigiPen from a coworker and suggested I apply there."

Career

Swift hosted the 20th Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony in 2020.

Hiring by Valve

Swift's first job was at Valve Corporation. She was hired "on the spot" by Valve boss Gabe Newell after she and her team demonstrated a game prototype named Narbacular Drop, which was Swift's senior college project at DigiPen. Narbacular Drop became the foundation for the highly acclaimed puzzle game Portal. Swift also worked as an artist on Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 while at Valve.

After leaving Valve, Swift joined the small development team Airtight Games before moving on to roles at large gaming companies.

Personal views

Making players feel smart

Swift has said that good puzzle design makes players feel smart. She told Game Developer: "You get a really good endorphin rush from the satisfaction of feeling smart... You have a problem in front of you, and if you can solve it, and figure it out, it just makes you feel really smart, and really clever. After people play our game, I want them to feel clever."

Approach as creative director

In a Game Developer interview in 2012, Swift described her role as a creative director as follows: "I like to do a little bit of everything, and I have a background in programming, and I have a background in art as well as design... more than anything else, I like contributing to the project."

Call to female game developers

Swift called on women in the industry to make themselves more visible in a 2013 blog post, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. "Be everything that the younger versions of us could've pointed to and proudly said: 'Girls make games too,'" wrote Swift. "When I blather endlessly about a game I'm working on... I hope that there's a little girl out there that realises her dreams are achievable."
