Development and pre-release

April Fool's Day origins

Pokémon Go originated as a 2014 April Fool's Day collaboration between Nintendo, The Pokemon Company, Game Freak and Google, called "Google Maps: Pokemon Challenge". The collaboration was an iOS and Android app that allowed players to catch Pokémon while exploring the real world using Google Maps. It was inspired by Pokemon Go developer Niantic's previous augmented reality game Ingress, which Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company had played and enjoyed.

Publishing

European releases began in July. The game was not launched in Japan, Pokemon's country of origin, until 22nd July, 2017.

Sales

Fastest chart topper

Was, at the time, the fastest game to top the App Store and Google Play charts, beating previous record holder Clash Royale.
